Abstract A signaling pathway transmits information from an upstream system to downstream systems, ideally in a unidirectional fashion. A key obstacle to unidirectional transmission is retroactivity, the additional reaction flux that affects a system once its species interact with those of downstream systems. This raises the fundamental question of whether signaling pathways have developed specialized architectures that overcome retroactivity and transmit unidirectional signals. Here, we propose a general procedure based on mathematical analysis that provides an answer to this question. Using this procedure, we analyze the ability of a variety of signaling architectures to transmit one-way (from upstream to downstream) signals, as key biological parameters are tuned. We find that single stage phosphorylation and phosphotransfer systems that transmit signals from a kinase show a stringent design trade-off that hampers their ability to overcome retroactivity. Interestingly, cascades of these architectures, which are highly represented in nature, can overcome this trade-off and thus enable unidirectional transmission. By contrast, phosphotransfer systems, and single and double phosphorylation cycles that transmit signals from a substrate are unable to mitigate retroactivity effects, even when cascaded, and hence are not well suited for unidirectional information transmission. Our results identify signaling architectures that, allowing unidirectional transmission o

This paper analyzes written and material sources concerning the earliest history of the Episcopal sees of Ulcinj and Bar, because there are still some ambiguities in the interpretation of the date of composition and the content of episcopal notita 3 published by Gustav Parthey in 1866, and the notitia 10 published in the critical edition of Jean Darrouzès in 1981, where they are both mentioned. Two notitae are actually the same list of metropolitans of the Constantinopolitan church, where were listed fifteen suffragan bishops of Durrachium. Although the compilation of that part of the list is dated in the end of the 10th or the beginning of the 11th century, the confusion produced at the beginning of the last century by dating this notitia in the middle of the 8th century still persists in literature. That misinterpretation consequently brought some scholars to the conclusion that the bishoprics in question were founded in the first half of the 8th century. Tracing the origin of that false interpretation proved that there is no firm scientific grounds for the assertion that Bar and Ulcinj had the bishops on that early date. Another problem considered in this paper is the identification of the bishop seat ĝ ÀÁÀÅţ»ÑÅ mentioned before ĝ ÅÌÀ¹ÚɼÑË in notitia 10. o ÀÁÀÅţ»ÑÅ has been recently identified by some scholars as Ohrid and not as Ulcinj. Analysis of the Latin and Greek written sources demonstrates that the confusion comes from the similar orthography of these two citi

In the early modern period, during the Venetian-Turkish wars, Zadar, as the capital city of the Venetian province of Dalmatia, represented one of the most powerful military strongholds of the Republic of Saint Mark on the eastern Adriatic. In the XVIIth century, during the period when two especially significant and long lasting Venetian-Turkish conflicts took place (the Candian and the Morean war), numerous military units, assembled by men from the broader area of the then contemporary (and former) Venetian territories from Istria to Albania, were active in Zadar and its surrounding area.

Usp. Tekavčić(1976). To su: 1) tip zamjene lat.-rom. nenaglašenog A; 2) tip zamjene lat.-rom. U u otvorenom slogu uključujući i refleks sufiksa -ŌNA; 3) tip zamjene lat.-rom. grupa tipa -VNC-; 4) tip zamjene lat.-rom. grupa tipa -VRC-; i 5) metaplazam A- > o-. Osim toga obrađena su i tri nova kriterija: 6) tip zamjene lat.-rom. E; 7) tip refleksa deminutivnog sufika -ŬLU; i 8) status s.-h. kvantitete u lat.-rom. otvorenoj penultimi. Dedicated to the period of the original Slavo-Romance contact (7-13 c. AD) the present work tackles the stratification of the oldest Romance borrowings in Serbo-Croatian and its issues. In particular, five existing criteria have been re-visited. Cf. Tekavčić (1976). These are: 1) Lat.-Rom. unstressed A and the type of its substitution; 2) Lat.-Rom. U in the open syllable and the type of its substitution including the reflex of the suffx -ŌNA; 3) L

Posebna izdanja 84. Balkanološki institut Srpske a

Esso si inserisce in man

The early-modern Adriatic was a conduit for the exchange of goods, ideas, and people. At the time, this region was divided between three leading economic and political powers: the Republic of Venice, the Ottoman Empire, and the Holy Roman Empire. It was also filled with a diverse array of peoples of different ethnicities and religions. Nevertheless, these people interacted across these political and cultural boundaries on a daily basis. This thesis will look at how the material culture produced, traded, and used in this region was able to help create and define the identities of individuals and groups. The trade of glass is the specific focus of this research, as it was able to be shaped and manipulated by craftsmen to fulfil the needs and desires of the consumer. This was also a thriving industry in Venice, which led the way in both technology and fashion. Venetian products were traded around the world, and these objects were replicated in factories throughout Europe. The Ottoman Empire was a large market for goods produced both in Venice and in the study area at Dubrovnik. In the past, scholarly attention has generally been concentrated on the direct interactions between Venice and the Ottoman Empire. However, as this study aims to demonstrate, this industry also relied on the participation of intermediaries, both individuals and smaller port cities in the eastern Adriatic. It will therefore examine how and where this glass was made, how it was transported to its final de

Problems and Measurement Techniques (Livorno, Italy June 19-20-21, 2018) was organized by the CNR-IBIMET in collaboration with the City of Livorno, the LEM Foundation, the FCS Foundation and the Compagnia dei Portuali di Livorno, with the patronage by Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, Accademia dei Georgofili, The University of Florence, the Tuscany Region and the North Tyrrhenian Sea Port System Authority. The Symposium, in which scholars from all over the Mediterranean basin participated, was an opportunity to illustrate new proposals and to promote actions to protect the Mediterranean coastal marine environment. In particular, the event was characterized by the search for technical and instrumental solutions to problems related to: energy production in the coastal area, morphology and evolution of coastlines, flora and fauna of the littoral system, management and integrated coastal protection, coastline geography, human influence on coastal landscape
Among the foreign influences in the Balkans, the Italian one was probably the last to express itself, but certainly not the least important. From the early 19th century, the Italian national movement, and later the Italian kingdom, was first a source of inspiration, and then a potential ally; finally, it would become an economic and political rival for the Balkan nations. Yet, the history of the two shores of Adriatic evolved in similar if not identical stages. The Risorgimento ended in 1870 and most of the Balkan states won their independence in 1878. The liberal Italy was a member of the Triple Alliance, while the Balkan states opted in their turn for one alliance or the other among the Concert of European powers at the turn of the century. The World War I brought to an end the respective national unifications on both shores of Adriatic and set the stage for their conflict or – in some cases – their alliances, in view of their respective strategies during the interwar period. The brief and inconclusive Italian war in the Balkans (1940-1943) ended in utter defeat, and opened the way for a different type of relations between Italy led by Christian Democrats and communist (with the exception of Greece) Balkan states. Economy and culture were the basis of relations between Italy and the Balkans in the post World War II period.Special Editions 123.
